Prompt:
"So here's the deal:

You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for a comic called THE FANTASTIC FOUR. It is issue 1 of this book.

You have been told that the comic is about four people who steal a spaceship, fly into space, get heavily irradiated by cosmic rays, and return to earth weirdly altered by their experience.

And that's it. The bastards haven't told you one more damn thing than that. Not a clue. They might all be women. It might be about the Indian space programme twenty years from now. For all you know this is a JG Ballard story, for christ's sake...

It's up to you what kind of company you're at. What kind of comics you make. How you translate that description of The Fantastic Four. What era you're in. Who you are, even. Go nuts with it."

Concept:

I thumbed through some of the monsters of the Victorian era. I found that horned people (no name to them) came up and thus I made the lead female (The Sue Storm) having been altered into one in her headshot. Rakshasa is another period monster and thus I made the freed African American at the bottom into a form of man-eaters. For my last two of the Four, I decided to go with my own playing. The first is an African Slave whom has lost his mouth/eyes during the transformation. He is also now covered with Egyptian symbols which could lead to some spiritual work. Lastly, I went strange on the white male because you can't do any form of The Fantastic Four and not have a brute. I see this group led by the Rakshasa male from the beginning.

My original idea was an all female team with their faces glowing white. I figured it was a bit too FreakAngels to work.

My imagination is nowhere near that fertile. Best I can do is "What ifs" like the FF being created just before HG Wells' War Of The Worlds took place. Reed is testing an experimental gas for zeppelins which will take them higher than any airship has ever gone. Ben is the pilot and Sue and Johnny are the backers for Reed's project. A radioactive meteor hits the atmosphere and the fallout of exotic radiation hits the airship and alters the four fantastically. The zeppelin explodes but the four survive because of Sue's new force field capability.

As they fall through the air Reed is stunned to see young Johnny on fire. But he's not in pain and he's actually flying like a 4th of July skyrocket. Ben has transformed into a lumpy orange thing of a man. Sue is nowhere to be seen. Ten suddenly she fades into view. Instinctively he reaches out to the woman only to discover his body can stretch. He grabs Sue and Ben and, playing a hunch, flattens his body to slow them down for a safe landing.

Because of the time period they are in the four decide not to reveal their powers to the world. Reed, Sue and Johnny try to live as normal a life as possible. Ben, using wigs and fake beards as a disguise, becomes a hermit. Then the Martians attack and the four are forced to defend themselves. Not only against the alien invaders but against their fellow Earthmen who think they are Martian spys.

Aflame and invisible the Storms are forced to fight naked until they meet up with Reed who has developed unstable molecules for clothing to adapt to his stretching body. Of course the Martians will die as they weere meant to. But what of the four fantastics...The Molder, the Ghost, the Skyrocket and the Thing? Now that the world knows about them how will the people of that time react?
