I've wanted to extend my reach for a long time. I've been watching more and more of my fellow commission artists getting jobs from tumblr. Well, I've had different Tumblrs for different projects. They've all been dead in the water. It seemed to me that if you don't already have a following then that obscurity follows you there. I was working on a piece with a client that was pretty much meant to obtain Wil Wheaton's reblogging. I was going to get paid for it. It was pretty fun. The client has a big tumblr following. No question it would probably get reblogged. Also, Wil Wheaon is a genius.

That said...

I got this in my inbox today from Warren Ellis's newsletter:

"Tumblr, though... that's something else. I felt like I was having trouble getting traction on Tumblr, and was talking about this with a friend. She showed me the most popular Tumblr she follows, and said, 'look at how she does it.'

She's posting every twenty minutes. That's one less post per hour than fucking Gawker generates. Amazing.

I set my Tumblr queue to autopost six times a day instead of four. Added five hundred readers in a week."

Now, I'm left with a very odd situation. I do happen to have at least 688 items uploaded here. I also got plenty of canceled WIPs, writings, even sample layouts that didn't get used... there's material across two portable hard drives from the past two years. There's stuff.

Essentially, to become popular on Tumblr would mean to have 72 fresh posts a day. In the idea that several of those would breach obscurity.

Daphne Blake at a bonfire with marshmallow all over her lips. Did I mention we're doing the Elf on the Shelf tradition this year?

My fiancee saw them last year on Pinterest. I've saw a few cute ones on Tumblr so far this year.

Example:


I decided to go with a green Annalee Elf instead. It's the same build. They both have wires within them for posing. Only the Annalee ones look so much more vintage. Which is what I liked the most about the Elf on the Shelf. They look like something you had as a kid.

The deal with elfontheshelf is that they get into trouble or mischief. Each day your child finds them in a situation.

Like they put all their undies on the Christmas tree or they got into the band-aids box.

My daughter fell asleep in it.

Luckily right before it got a bit dark. Which surprised me a little. There's some content in there that is really aimed for tweens. I'd think you'd have to be that old to fully understand some of the bigger ideas in the flick. Which, I think, is not the target of the film. It was quite rushed in some aspects which I didn't quite enjoy. Wreck it Ralph kept my daughter awake and was far superior in look.

Though, I expect Jack Frost and Edward Cullen/Mr. Grey lookalike Pitch Dark yaoi in mass amounts.

In the very least, Jack Frost and the Lorax's Once-ler.

The gals are mad about that Once-ler.. Instant fave with him.

I was also left very confused by the movie's explanation on how the spirit creatures(?) come to exist. The example we are given for Jack Frost cannot be applied directly to the other characters (Santa, Easter Bunny, etc).

Back before my portfolio was put to the flame by my ex, I had dozens of storyboard pages. The majority of them were for campaigns. I also had a decade of sequential art. Sample pages. There were at least ten quality reworked, reworked, reworked samples. I've made it a point to shy away from paneled pieces for years. There's a bit of trauma when all your stuff gets turned to ash. Even more if it's everything you did in college. The pieces I improved after getting quality advice from Darick Robertson (The Boys). The pieces I completely redid after Casey Jones (Disney) told me that they were trash. So I haven't really did any sequential work for years.I was shot over a one page prompt with two bits of dialogue from . It's now turned into a 14"x45" monster. That's after resizing my mock-up down from before. Now I plunge into digitally inking it and coloring it.  Hopefully there won't be many rust stains on it when I'm finished.

 November 15th - November 22nd. SNOW LET IT SNOW
When you think of snow, it usually brings up memories of childhood. It just makes sense that Citizen Kane's rosebud was a sled. I grew up in Houston but went to college in Minneapolis. I witnessed plenty of snowstorms in college and the dread of having to shovel. The only special snow memory I have is when I was six years old. It snowed in Houston. I got to build a very tiny snowman. That's what we're working with this week. We're working with snow. Whether it's snowing in the background or there's snow on the ground, that's the discount this week. Let's make it winter up in here.

was kind enough to steampunk up two sonic screwdrivers for my daughter and I.

Both came with the condition that once the battery dies, that's it. No more sounds. No more glow.

Which was perfectly fine. We've had a lot of fun running around playing with them both. Every toy of hers has been 'checked up' and every crack has been zapped in case of Dalek.

But today, the larger Sonic Screwdriver is dying.

The tip is lit. The sound playing over and over. Not once stopping. Filling our row-house full of the noise. It's dying, you see. It is making sure the whole world knew it was here. That even after the last bit of battery fades, that we will never forget the whirling music that it emitted.

This is its swan song. Quite literally so.

In my world, every Sonic Screwdriver has chanted like this at its end. It's the true soundtrack of regeneration.

The day after we bought the wedding dress, my bank account was bombed by my junkie mother. That whole mess is now settled. Money was lost but the account/credit has been settled. Today I receive a random e-mail from SimplyBridal. "Because of recent heavy sales volume, orders are expected to take up to an additional 7 days on top of the 30-35 day delivery schedule." Our wedding is December 8. And by that math, the dress won't even be finished until 27 and then it will be shipped. There's no way it would get here on time.

I'm starting to remember exactly why the last wedding got cancelled.

  November 1st - November 7th. CROSSOVERS When Worlds Collide
There's no fertile ground better than that of crossovers. Few years back, I was part of a role-playing group with a LOST premise. All the characters were established literature characters. A vast majority of them were comic characters that had just woken up in this urban sprawl that you couldn't escape. I played Gregory House that lived at Norman Bates' Hotel and eventually cured the skin condition of the Joker. I have a lot of great memories from that writing group. Why? Because crossovers work.
